Choosing a Murano chandelier isn’t just about personal taste.
It’s about understanding how that piece will actually fit and function within your space.
When proportions are right, everything feels natural, balanced, almost effortlessly “right.” The light works better, and the room gains character.
When proportions are off, you notice it immediately.
A chandelier that’s too large can overwhelm the room, while one that’s too small fades into the background and loses its impact.
That’s why it’s not a good idea to choose based on instinct alone, you need a few clear reference points and a practical understanding of your space.
Learn how to choose a Murano chandelier that’s truly designed for your room, not just beautiful on its own.
Proportions and spacing
The first thing to consider is the size of the room. There’s a simple but very effective rule:
add the room’s length and width (in meters), then convert that number into centimeters to estimate the ideal chandelier diameter.
Example:
a 4 x 5 meter room → 4 + 5 = 9
recommended diameter: about 90 cm
It’s not an exact formula, but it’s a great starting point to avoid choosing something out of scale.
Beyond floor space, ceiling height makes a big difference.
With standard ceilings (around 8.8–10 ft), it’s best to choose more compact designs that don’t hang too low.
If ceilings are higher than 10 ft, you can go with a larger or multi-tier chandelier.
In very tall spaces (over 13 ft), the chandelier can become a true statement piece.
One of the most common mistakes is installing a tall chandelier in a low-ceiling room:
it not only looks off, but also becomes impractical in everyday use.
Placement matters just as much. There are a few general guidelines (depending on the chandelier size) that help avoid mistakes:
In walkways, leave at least 7–7.2 ft between the floor and the lowest point; above a dining table, the ideal distance is 28–36 inches from the tabletop.
In a living room or open space, the chandelier should relate to the furniture, not feel randomly placed.
Simple details, but essential for both comfort and usability.
Shape and lighting
The shape of the room matters
Every space has its own layout, and the chandelier should reflect it:
square rooms: a centered, symmetrical fixture works best
rectangular rooms: elongated designs are more effective
open spaces: multiple coordinated fixtures can work well
Murano chandeliers naturally draw attention, so they need to fit the space without feeling forced.
How much light do you actually need?
A Murano chandelier isn’t just decorative, it also needs to provide proper lighting. The amount depends on the room size:
small rooms (up to 100–130 sq ft): 3–5 lights (~1000–2000 lumens)
medium rooms (130–215 sq ft): 5–8 lights (~2000–4000 lumens)
large rooms (over 215 sq ft): 8 or more lights (4000+ lumens)
You should also factor in other light sources to avoid a space that’s too dim—or overly bright.

Color and glass transparency
Glass plays a bigger role than most people think:
clear or transparent glass: visually lighter, perfect for smaller spaces
bold colors or intricate designs: ideal for larger rooms
gold finishes or rich detailing: enhance more classic interiors
Natural light also matters: a bright room gives you more flexibility, while in darker spaces it’s better to avoid overly heavy designs.
Choosing a Murano chandelier means finding the right balance between aesthetics and the actual space.
It’s not just decorative, it actively shapes the atmosphere of the room.
When it’s well proportioned, it doesn’t stand out just for its beauty: it works, it lights the space properly, enhances the room, and helps define its identity in a natural way.
That’s what really makes the difference.
